It's short for "expatriate" - a word used for someone who moves to and lives in a country foreign to their own while retaining their country of origin's citizenship.
I use the term regarding myself tongue-in-cheek. I "expatriate" for 3 months then "repatriate" for another 9.
Immigrant is another word for the same thing lol.
Regardless - my "real" expat friends there for the most part do not own vehicles for reasons stated above. In Negril especially its not needed and when needed rental options are available.
Gotta say though - it was kinda nice the times we rented a motorcycle there for a month or longer. Just jump on and go...
