Tim - no, I was talking about the recent shootings, sorry you misunderstood. My friends were robbed at gun-point at the Great House. This was a few years back so the question was probably were there even bullets in the gun...no matter, they saw gun, they handed it over.
People - tourists and residents alike get robbed all over Jamaica every day. In broad daylight and at night. Weren't you robbed on the beach road during the day?
I'm not saying its a good situation there and I certainly will not even try to convince people who are afraid of going out of cancelling or not going. I'm expressing my opinion and my feelings that this will not stop me from returning but I have strong ties there other than sand and sea.
Everything I hear from you tells me you should look for another vacation destination. Sounds like you've traveled a bit so you must have many alternatives to Negril. I base this not just on this "round" of violence and robberies that have taken place this past week - I base this on the fact that I cannot remember a single post where you've had anything positive to say about the place. It surprises me that you are even considering going in December - what exactly do you think is going to "change" in 9 months? Its almost like you are on a mission to convince others from traveling there. Of course, it is your right to express your opinion as it is my right to express mine. And my opinion stands - your chances of getting gunned down in the street there are pretty slim. Following some basic common sense rules you can avoid getting robbed or minimize the damage. First rule: Realize that you are visiting a desperately poor country that has a crime problem.
Weird, thinking out loud - I spent 2 1/2 months there - November-January - and I only heard of one robbery (friends of friends). Doesn't mean there weren't more...its all I heard about. Now that I'm back on FB and the internet its crazy how much I am hearing about and how much mis-information is out there (someone of FB announced a shooting at 3 Dives when in fact it was at a guy's house on Summerset Lane at 4:00am). I guess what I'm trying to say is everyone stay calm and level headed. My friends tell me there's TONS of police presence there right now...more than usual. So I don't know if that's "something" or not.
