A few weeks ago, we booked a trip to Negril for June. The recent events have definitely given me reason to reconsider, but for now I don't plan on canceling. The property that we are staying at on the West End is very secure, and if we have to take taxis everywhere (even to places within walking distance), so be it. When I look at the alternatives for Caribbean destinations, everyplace has it's pros and cons. The safest island we've been to is Virgin Gorda in the BVI, where the most common crime is the smuggling of ganja from Jamaica. Airfare to the BVI is twice as much as it is for us to fly to MBJ and accommodations are usually high-end and reflect that in the cost. Although, the island is abound with pristine, deserted beaches, it lacks any decent vibe. In fact, the few restaurants and bars there are run by ex-pats or Brits from the UK. In the end, I would be paying more money but would enjoy it less than a Negril vacation.
