Ok I saw a disturbing breakdown in communication in this thread and it has been bothering me.
After Likkle Red's post Macy was offended - I for the life of me didn't understand why, because I know Likkle Red and nI know that THE LAST thing she would do would be to deliberately offend somebody . I know that her post was purely conversational and not judgemental - but Macy thought she was being judged.
Now this last post has allowed me to understand where Macy is coming from -she thought there was an effort in this thread to put her down , which I never would have gotten from this thread if she didnt just say so. I was left rather confused.
Now I get it ,and it occurred to me the breakdown is in language. The word "beg" is used differently in Jamaica than it is in the USA - beg is used as "ask" in jamaica - while in USA when our kids ask us for something more than once we say "quit begging" We are taught from a very young age that "begging" (asking more than once) is rude.
No one thinks you are rude Macy.
My guess is most people don't mind being asked for things - whatever it is and from whoever - but - if they ask twice - after being told NO - it becomes begging - You could ask me a favor - ask me for money - ask me for just about anything and I would not feel you were begging. If I said No and you kept asking It would turn into begging.
In Jamaica you could say "Can I beg you a mango" and you would simply asking for a Mango. If you say that here, they look at you like your from another planet.
Do you get where I am going with this???
