Maybe this is a dumb question but I need to ask for my own comfort level. I use Revolution Flea and Tick for my dog and cat. Unfortunately here it requires a prescription which hasn't been a problem however I feel they are taking advantage of people and making it more and more impossible for the working class to even afford an animal. Here they require a well check $45 and a heartworm test $35 every year before they will give the script even though the dog has been on the same medication for 2 yrs. Cat doesn't even go out the door or get heartworms yet they want him in for a $40 well check to reissue the script. If they hadn't lied to me I would have had no issues with this but they told me it wouldn't be a problem and I could just bring them to the drive thru for their yearly vaccinations and then call the office and they would fax the script wherever I wanted to have it filled but when I fulfilled that they denied the script and came up with all this other BS. So I have found where I can buy it without a script from Canada but have seen some reports that the medication may be generic or not the strength of what I would get here in the US. I don't have a clue but really need to get on this as they used their last monthly dose over a month ago. Any info would be greatly appreciated. If I don't do this then I may have to use a different brand that doesn't require a prescription. I hate to as Revolution has worked so well and it protects against so much more than most of the others.

I understand your frustration. I do not buy these meds from my local vet for the same reason. They try to pull this with me all the time. I have a holistic vet (about an hour away) that also practices western medicine. She told me that you don't need to do the yearly or bi-yearly ck for heartworms if your pet has been on the medication. She does not require me to bring them in, I just call her and she mails me the heartworm meds I need. She told me thinks the blood checks are a scam for other vets to get more money from you. The companies that make these drugs say they have guarantees. If your dog is on the medication as prescribed and they get infected, they will pay for the vet bills to get the worms out. That's what the local vet told me anyway...and why they say they require you to do the blood checks. My holistic vet also told me that you do not need to give them the medicine exactly every 30 days. She told me that I can give it every 6 weeks. She thinks the dogs are being over medicated as it is, but it is important to protect against heartworms and parasites, so we have to give them these meds. Double edge sword. The lifecycle of heartworms is 3 months from egg to full grown so even if there is a short lapse in the meds, they are strong enough to kill what might me in there, if it's administered within the 3 months and not fully grown worms. She only medicates her dogs every 3 months. I am afraid to take that risk, so I administer every 6 weeks. I figured that she's a vet and can take care of an issue if one arose in her own dogs. My mom lives on a farm and uses the meds you can buy at the farm stores. She hasn't had any problems. Have you checked Farm and Country or someplace like that? My cats are not on any heartworm meds. They are indoors. The vet (local and holistic) told me if they stay indoors, they don't need it. I don't know about buying them from over the internet. You are taking your chances. I have thought about it but am afraid they might be low quality. Do you use anything for fleas? The past few years I have been using a little garlic (**be careful with the garlic, too much can be toxic) and brewer's yeast mixed into the food. Then at bath time I use Dr. Bronners and some citrus oil. There is only 1-2 months I have to use Frontline. Usually around Sept./Oct. when the fleas are uncontrollable.

The Canadavet site is really an Australian site- drugs are shipped from Australia. I'm sure the people meds you all were buying in Canada you had a script for?? I couldn't just walk into a pharmacy in Canada and get, say, Pravastatin without a script right? I'm guessing Canadians have to have a script to get Revolution? Can a Canadian please set me straight on this This vet and pet med business has gotten out of hand. It is very quickly reaching a point where common folks wont be able to afford to have a pet. What a damn shame.......

Evertime I had to get meds for Howlin' Wolf I would take it to the local pharmacy 1st. People equivalent was always about 1/3rd the price. I think that vets "ride the purse strings" WAY MORE !!!!! than necessary.

I've ordered meds from CanDrugstore.com (1-866-444-6376) in the past for my parents. Their website http://www.candrugstore.com shows pet meds; not sure if pet prices are good .

Sophie, yes we need prescripts for prescript drugs. One of the reasons they insist on the vet visit is to check for other things (over all health) and to weigh the animal.

In manitoba the vets, used to require the heartworm check before issuing a script now not needed. I usally buy mine with the rabies vac. Rev. is the best up here esp for the ticks, they literally fall off dead. I believe I pay around $110.00 for the green box large dog size. Not sure if a non customer could purchase, ie must have a dog on file in order to buy. But bloodwork not required. |
