Saskatchewan, province of Canada, one of the Prairie Provinces.(251,700 sq mi) It is one of only two Canadian provinces without a saltwater coast.

A bit like us saying big flat Kansas. You may remember the line from the movie "Toto, I don't think we're in Saskatchewan anymore."

Interesting that today there was a story that half of US crops are dependent upon undocumented farm workers, which, along with farmers themselves, delivery people, etc., are and should be viewed as essential workers in the food chain, whom we should be praising.

Humor and truth; If 288 workers can harvest Canada, wow. I've said that if certain Jamaicans get to America, they are talented enough to be worth a million dollars.

When I worked with Trane company they had an office in Regina I would have business communication with from time to time. I actually helped to setup their online parts ordering. I didn't write the code but wrote the ticket for the code and set it up when code was in place.
That said I would say you are correct I am a stereotypical American and know little of Canada but have developed many friendships with Canadians over the years. On our last reach there was a guy I have known for a couple of years but this year it became more of a friendship. He is from Saskatchewan and has this business where he plows this piping into the ground to drain water so crops can grow and not drown out so to speak. Lots of the equipment was/is custom made and with pictures and his description it was quite interesting learning about what he does. He must be pretty big into it as he does work in the states also. He is older like me and his son is mostly running the show now as the business passes from father to son.
5000 acres WOW what crops do they rotate and grow? Canola (rapeseed), wheat?? I used to duck hunt a lot in Arkansas and the farm I hunted on had huge acreage like that. Only 3000 but leased thousands more. All equipment harvested and planted though so no labor like the vegetable crops immigrants tend to work.

In-laws own close to 4000 acres, and rent the balance. They grow a variety of crops - wheat, oats, barley, canola, legumes etc. Even though they run a pretty fair sized operation, there are a few far larger operations. There is a farm about 100km from where I live, when you drive by their property it looks more like a dealership than personal operation. Like 6-8 each of huge tractors, combines, high clearance sprayers, long row of semi tractors and grain haul trailers. I don't know how much land they seed, but would be in the 10s of thousands of acres.
Now I have never been in any of the grainbelt states, but something many people don't realize about Saskatchewan is it is only the southern half of the province that is "mostly" farmland. Once you get about 50km north of Prince Albert (where I live), it becomes nothing but lakes and forest. It is where I was born, and is the only city here I would live. I couldn't handle the prairies. We own a log cabin on a remote lake 4 hours north. Only 3 cabins on the lake, it's common to go days without saying another human.

Tim . My mother was from Sask . She was born some where around Weyburn . Two of her sisters married Johnston brothers from Eston . They farmed like 15 thousand acres of wheat . My cousins , whom I have never met and their children run the show now . She always said that it was a long ways from Weyburn to a French town in Nova Scotia . Your camp sounds like my cup of tea.

It's kind of strange, I have probably traveled to at least a dozen countries if not more, but have never been to Weyburn in my life. Closest is Regina, a little over an hour from there.

Jamaicans have come to Maine forever also . traditionaly for apples , but also tourist related service , mostly on the coast . There are Jamaicans everywhere , world wide .
My very first trip to JA , 1977 I met a man in the hills above roaring river , who picked apples about 15 miles from my home . That same orchid now has a yearly yard fest , only chance I get to have curry goat . Portland Maine has a Jamaican population , quite a few from Lances Bay , Hanover .

It's pretty rustic, but through the years we have added solar power with a large battery bank to use instead of generator, wiring including light fixtures and outlets, as well as a Bosch on demand propane water heater for a nice hot shower. Used to use one of those black plastic bag showers. Also has a 200 gallon water tank we pump water into from lake to supply kitchen and bathroom sink as well as an actual flush toilet. It's nothing like an Ontario "cottage" but a pretty cool place to get to after a 6 hour trip from home entailing a boat ride to a 200 yard portage, then another boat ride. A true wilderness trip every time.
