returning to the OP topic of Longwood... sure kill each other off, but mess with tourism and things get serious.
Negril Stakeholders Wary Of Spillover Violence

some interesting points (to me) in the latter part of the article:
- the largest construction project in history of Negril (presumably he meant the Royalton) will bring in more criminals (and squatters). I hadn't thought of that, but it makes sense.
- crime is already bad this year and come Nov/Dec it will get worse b/c people want their Christmas $ (I've heard this theme before: crime goes up before holidays and start of the school year)
- we (hoteliers/tourism) can't hide anything anymore b/c of the internet (implies they used to hide bad stories - which I think we mostly all knew anyway)
- we can't reply to concerned guests/internet users that we're doing anything about crime, b/c we're not
- hustlers and criminals have no respect for the courtesy corps officers on the beach ( I witnessed pure fire from a vendor on last visit "tell yah boss, mommy & daddy can't get food to eat, there will be riots, there will be war")
