Rastagirl, if you look at some of your older posts through the years, I think you will see that you're evolving, because you used to automatically defend Negril to the hilt and often point at the victim whenever bad news came up on a thread; that's a good thing.
I think crime is definitely on the rise in Negril. I don't go back to the wild, wild west days like you, just about 12 years or so, but there is no question it's worse than before. Just too many bad apples. I think a lot of it has to do with the way Jamaicans have been brought up -- without trying to sound like a bigot (cause some of it happens in USA, too), it's just ridiculous how many single-parent families there are because so many Jamaicans have kids without enough resources, combined with men tending to split. This paradigm, combined with a beggy-beggy mentality is not good, and it sickens me to see young kids begging. I just HATE this, and there is no question it leads to a poor work ethic, and thus more criminals.
I mean, something is just NOT normal, when I take an inventory of my best friends in Negril, and it looks like this:
- John Midiri had his shoes stolen at Fun Holiday
-- Tattoo Charlie had his computer and other items stolen at Xtabi, then had his shirt and towel and other items stolen at Negril Palms, plus his cell went missing at Canoe and was only returned after a 100 dollar reward was offered.
-- Brasi had his lap top stolen at Sunset on Cliffs
-- Michael Guirigay had 500 dollars cash stolen from his room at a private rooming house up road from Canoe.
-- Tony Braxton's wife had her cell phone stolen, perhaps at Negril Palms or elsewhere
-- Tizzy had her fancy sunglasses stolen at a bar on the beach
-- Chickster had a gold necklace stolen from inside the safe at RIU
-- Shelly K had her camera stolen from inside the room at RIU
-- Sansanya had her cell phone at other items stolen from an intruder inside her room late at night as she lay in bed at Sunshine Village.
-- My expat friend Keith from Philly had a bunch of stuff stolen from his house near Banton's the minute he left town without a full-time caretaker in the house.
-- The singer from Danger Danger has a condo in Point Village, and a few times he has been stripped clean of everything thieves could carry when he returned to the states.
-- And you, Rastagirl, had your cell phone stolen (hubby actually) outside Negril but still in Jamaica.
-- Plus, Kevon, a worker at RIU, was shot during a robbery attempt, the owner of Roots was killed in his house when intruders cut a hole in the roof, the owner of Mariposa Hideaway was killed, and the the owner of 24/7 was involved in a machete attack (he allegedly did the attacking) and his place was burned to the ground.
-- As for me, I have been pick-pocketed, I've had money pulled from my hand as I attempted to pay for gas, and I've had someone scam a relative to wire $500 shortly after my cell phone went missing and he/she made pretend he was me.
So, is all this too much? I am not sure. But I am wondering if I would have such an inventory had I regularly vacationed in Cancun, Hawaii, Tahiti or even any neighborhood near my home in Los Angeles. I don't think so.
