new book: Dudus His Rise, His Reign..etc - Sharleen - 05-04-2011

new book that sounds like an interesting book to read, the article is from the Gleaner today: http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com & scroll down

With just under a month before the first anniversary of one of Jamaica's most tragic events, the incursion of Tivoli Gardens, which left at least 74 Jamaicans dead and all the drama that followed thereafter; a one-month manhunt, a dramatic arrest and the swift extradition of the man who caused it all, Michael Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, and even the recently concluded Manatt-Dudus enquiry, there is more.

A full-length non-fictional account of the Dudus saga and all its intricacies has made it clear that another log has seemingly been tossed into the fire of controversy that simply refuses to leave the Dudus saga in the backdrop.

Set for release on May 24, one year after the incursion date, Jamaica's First President, Dudus 1992-2010, His Rise, His Reign, His Demise, is a 306-page investigative volume that literally chronicles the life and exploits of the man himself; Dudus, in addition to the epidemic-like level of lawlessness in Jamaica since its independence in 1962.

The primary focus of this volume, however, centres around one specific land mass; a portion of real estate that has been labelled 'the mother of all garrisons' - Western Kingston's Tivoli Gardens, and its cast of notorious characters; all of which is said to have contributed and paved the way to Dudus' presidency.

Written, investigated and compiled by K.C. Samuels, and published by Pageturner Publishing House, Jamaica's First President takes readers beyond the headlines for a walk on the lawless side of Jamaica. The accounts are true, photos authentic, and the wealth of information presented so riveting, there is little doubt regarding the spellbinding effect this volume is sure to have on its readers.

A page turner from its preface, the first paragraph reads, 'History has recorded the names and legacies of many men, some great, some famous, and some, infamous. The famous and great are many and interesting in their own right, but the infamous seem to possess a different sort of power; they are colourful, dangerously intriguing, and more interesting than we are at times willing to admit, and when it comes to the Caribbean, specifically Jamaica, none has elevated to such a status in recent times than the infamous, and now world renowned, Michael Christopher Dudus Coke.'

dedicated to the deceased

Dedicated to all the lives lost in the May 24, 2010 incursion, Jamaica's First President also takes readers into the lives of some of Jamaica's most notorious persons; while also revealing some of the intricacies surrounding the inner workings of the garrisons from those who know it best - those directly involved.

The chronology in this account is historical in its context, but also extremely relevant to the future, if the mistakes of the past are never to be repeated. Readers will also find it interesting to delve into the other side of the man known to many only as Presi, as, in addition to what is generally known, the volume is divided into three main sections - namely, Dudus the boy, Dudus the man and Dudus the president; with each section probing deep into each of those specific time spans.

According to Pageturner's CEO, Karl Larmond, "We are excited about this project, there's no doubt about that, we are in the business of books, and this is a book that will quite possibly go down in history as one of Jamaica's most read literary works, simply because the individual it highlights is that intriguing, hate him or love him, be he guilty or innocent, that's not for us to decide, that's a job for the courts. But with that said, I believe the watchword or keyword here should be understanding, not sensationalism, but understanding this project and what it is really all about, understanding what happened, how it happened and why it happened, and not from the regular sources of information that we have all become accustomed to, and may even have issues with, but from an independent source, whose only agenda is the freedom of information, which is exactly what Pageturner Publishing House is about, especially with this particular publication."

Jamaica's First President was to have been available internationally on Amazon.com as early as yesterday, for pre-orders, and available locally in Jamaica at all Sangster's Bookstores, all Kingston Book Shops, and literally everywhere books are sold.
