Re: cultural differences article - ohliz - 01-31-2011 Quite the controversial article (and book) around here at least. I have had several conversations with people about it, including one with my mom about her raising me, ironically, in Taiwan - we are not Asian but I was born there and grew up there for a bit. There's something to be said for some of what she does...making her child stay with the piano thing until she had a breakthrough and got it...that is a valuable lesson, to stick with something until you "win" and not to give up. The putting the kid down, cards not good enough and all that...well that I can't see doing myself. Honestly my own methods with my kids, now almost 17 and 13, are more typical American...lots of love, esteem building, creative encouragement, etc. Not a lot of pushing, but I do demand a certain level of grades and behavior or there are consequences. I think I have been raising my two children about the same and one is a good student and a good kid who is an amazing musician, the other is an exceptional student and athlete. More their choices than mine, that one cares a lot more about grades than the other, I think....that one is more "driven" in general. Anyhow, other than shaking your head what did you think of it?
Re: cultural differences article - Jenny - 01-31-2011 Wow is right. Definitely ~culturally-different~ God help the Chinese child who has a learning disability, or mental retardation, or autism, or. . .
Re: cultural differences article - Winni - 02-01-2011 I can't imagine how stressful this must be on the average student, who is not in the 'high achiever' category.
