We woke up at 5:30am and got ready. We were at the airport at 6am. The worker at the desk didn't get there till 6:30am. We were walked to the little plane on the tarmac. It has room for 6 passengers plus the pilot. I was pretty nervous to fly on a little plane.
The pilot greeted us and arranged us to size for balance. Then he showed us how to get out in an emergency and went over safety rules. The little plane was loud but the flight was smooth. Flying into Montserrat was amazing. We could see the volcano to the right and the pyroclastic flow that has added 2 square miles to the island. Landing was smooth as well.
Once we were on the ground, we all hopped out of the plane on the tarmac and walked into the little airport. It was literally one room. There was 1 immigration officer. We got a shamrock stamp in our passport. He made sure to tell us that "even in Ireland, you can't get this." He asked us when we were leaving and gave us that date in our visa.
We moved about 5 steps and collected our luggage. Then 5 more steps to the immigration officer. He asked is we had any meat or veggies. We said "nope" and he said "welcome to Montserrat". It was really the easiest and smallest airport exchange we've ever had.
Sunny was right outside the door waiting for us. He drove us around the island and gave us a bit of history. It took about 1/2 an hour to travel the remaining island. 2/3 was destroyed by the volcano. Little Bay is the new port and Brades is the acting capital. The country is planning on making Little Bay the new center hub for the island and there was lots of work going on when we drove through.
We stopped at Hilltop Coffee Shop on the way. Sunny's parents own it. His wife and baby were there too. It is also an acting museum for the island since the old one was destroyed by the volcano. There are lots of artifacts from Old Town and Salem, along with musical items in reference to AIR Studio.
Next we hit up a grocery store, one of about 4 on the island. We got 2 cases of beer, cake, sardines, crackers, bananas, coffee and canned hot dogs. Food on the island is a little more because it's all imported. Coffee was $300ec, (a little over $11usd) for a freeze dried brick of Folgers.
Montserrat is very small. Population is about 5000. Car rental is very affordable, around $30 a day. Walking is tough as everything is uphill. Steep hills. I suggest renting a car.
We arrived at the house and it is beautiful! We rented the pool house part of Bunkum Beach Guesthouse. It is perfect for 2 of us. It was $70 a night. We can see Redonda and Nevis in the distance. The kitchen opens up to make a poolside bar.
Our neighbors were The Governor of Montserrat, Bob Lutz (the GM guy) and the other side of the bay was the Heiress to 7-Up.
We were having a few beers poolside when the lady renting the 2 bedroom house on the property arrived. She is a chef on a boat in Falmouth Harbor, Antigua.
Matt and I took a shortcut to Bunkum Beach. The walk is very rocky and crosses a creek. It was slippery and I took a little tumble. All was ok though. The beach was nice and we had it all to ourselves. The current was strong so I didn't go in far. Matt was climbing on the rocks and took a tumble into the sea, along with the camera. We still had our iPhones so we were still able to take pictures.
We went back to the house and Matt took a little nap. I went to the yard and wrote in my journal. There were iguanas all over the yard. They were cute and friendly. They are used to people feeding them so they all run after you. They kept trying to lick my toenails that were painted purple.
There was also a bunny that had free roam of the yard. There used to be 3 but Sun thinks someone ate them while they were in the US. She visited in the morning and the evening but would quickly leave if we didn't have food.
About 2:30 Matt and I went walking for lunch/dinner. We walked about 1/2 mile when we saw a sign for Bunkum Beach Bar. We walked down the steep hill only to arrive at a closed restaurant. We trekked back up the hill with a few breaks in-between.
We finally reached the top of the hill and found a few people waiting for the bus (van). You can take the bus anywhere on the island for $3ec. At night is is $5ec. I overheard a woman talking to a man about "the English people" being too lazy to walk up the hills. I smiled at the man she was talking to and we started walking...up more hills. I had to take a few breathers. It really is all uphill. We found a supermarket that was open and I was able to get a bottle of water. It was much better after that.
We reached Hilltop Coffee Shop (our destination) and they were closed too. I was beat and felt defeated. We walked next door to a little shop and I asked the man if they served food. He said they did! YES! Finally!! The bus passed us while we were standing there. It is quicker to walk but much easier to hitch a ride.
People's Place was the name of the shop. The owners name is John. He is a real character and very personable. I ordered a water but he said they don't serve water. He pulled out a vodka bottle and told me it's cure me of my dehydration. I told him I could not drink booze right now. He told me it was his homemade cure. I told him if it was overproof, I was gonna be mad. He poured me a little glass and it was coconut water. It was perfect. He was razzing me about not trusting him. It was all in fun.
I ordered baked chicken. Matt ordered fried fish. Both meals were served veggies, salad, yam, breadfruit and spinach with rice. We ate all of it.
We stuck around after dinner for a few drinks. Another couple showed up and we talked to them about life in Montserrat. They own the scuba shop in Montserrat. They were very nice. They told us about safety in Montserrat. He said the last major crime incident was a few years ago when a couple tourists hitched a ride and the driver demanded their money. The hitchikers said no so the driver took them home. He laughed and said it was either a really bad attempt or he was just stupid.
A few more people showed up. The one family lives here and he works for the Minister of Finance. They are also our neighbors. Everyone was very nice and welcoming. The pilot of our small plane over showed up after he got off work. We shared a few beers with everyone and it was getting late. Matt and I planned on walking home, it was all downhill, so easy. The pilot offered to give us a lift. He lives right behind the house we are staying in. He said "I got you part of the way here, might as well take you the rest of the way". He was a super nice guy.
Montserrat is so small that crime is very very low. Everyone knows everyone and if you did commit a crime, there is no where to run. People leave their houses unlocked and keys in the car all the time. We were also told that the police on the island are very friendly. If you have had too many to drink, they will drive your car home to make sure you arrive safely. The motto of Montserrat is "The way the Caribbean used to be".
We did see one man along the road on our walk that was rambling on and on. He was yelling at us and calling us f@ckers. There was also an assumed murder last year when a local man's body was found near one of the ghauts (pronounced 'guts', a natural waterway). So...it's not perfect but it's damn near it.
The scuba guy told us a story about a group of Rastas that live on the side of the Volcano. They refuse to move so the government lets them be. They swear there are UFO's flying in and our of the volcano at night. Jokes were had about smoking too much ganja. Speaking of Ganja...we didn't see it at all. It's around but it was never brought out, offered, or smelled.
Remember the BIG Virgin Atlantic plane that we saw land in Antigua? The pilot of that plane is the brother to the pilot that took us home. They met up in Antigua while they were both flying in.
Back at the house, the pilot had a few drinks with us and offered to take us to Bunkum's Beach Bar the following day for dinner. We made plans to meet at 6pm the next evening for sunset and dinner. He knows the lady that owns it and said he'd have her open for us.
Matt went to bed about 9pm. I stayed up till 10:30. I saw a shooting star. In the distance I could see the lights of Nevis and a glow further away of St. Kitts.
Ready for some pictures? Here ya go!
Boarding Pass for Fly Montserrat

Me on the little plane

Inside the little plane

Everyone crammed in and ready to go!

View from my window

Flying into Monsterrat.
There is this little voice in my head that keeps saying I want to go. So much for the voices:-). So many of the shots remind me of the north coast in Jamaica.
Lovely, thanks for the great pics!

awesome awesome awesome, can't wait for the next part....did the little plane a few times, it actually was the ones that land on water....an experience for sure....

Nailed it !!!!!!

Great photos Thanks for sharing

Love it, but not too sure about tarantulas and iguanas!

I noticed the couple in front of you in the little plane had ear plugs in. Did they give those to everyone on the plane or did this couple plan ahead because they knew how loud the flight would be?
Looks like a really fabulous laid back place Smile

Thanks for posting and the pictures looks like a wonderful place to visit.

What a great adventure you were on. The cottage looks perfect and the price is right too.
I love your reports JB. You have a great writing style and you don't forget the details.
This is a fun read for sure!
