Welcome to Tammy's board!
I looked at your profile and it says you are moving to Jamaica soon. There are several helpful Jamaican property owners here on this forum.
We are a friendly knowledgeable bunch and would love you to introduce yourself.

Thank you! I will happily take you up on your invitation. I was planning to move lock stock and barrel or container as it may be, by the end of 2012. I have since learned that like so many other things that I desire it is never as simple as I'd wish, and I can't stay year round till I get permanent residence status which takes a while ( read - forever )- no real surprise there, and unfortunately it seems I will be limited to 6 moths a year. meh. So what do you want to know... I'm canadian by birth, my kids are grown and I am done with the rat race. I want to buy a small 2 bed house not too far from town - maybe up Sheffield way - I have a few friends there. Grow food in my garden, a couple of fruit trees, maybe raise some chickens, and one of my portable skills is I'm a tailor with experience in sewing for those who don't fit the "average" size I am a writer by trade, a geek and philosopher/scientist by education, amateur photographer by inclination, and a fairly practical down to earth sort of woman with a great sense of humour, and a positive outlook who does her best to practice random acts of compassion. I love genuine people, real food and music I can move to. So I'm looking at what I'll need to do, papers I'll need to file, timelines etc. Any help finding a place is also welcome. Several people have suggested renting - and if I have to come and go every 2 months that might be the first thing I have to change. Point is that I'll do what I need to, to get to my heart home. respect,

DH, you have come to the right place, if your ready to hear the truth. I might suggest planning to spend six months to a year before making a complete move. What was it someone said in another thread - I spent a year renting in Negril. (i went home at the six months got a stamp and went back again). I wanted to know one way or another if it was a place i could move to for life. I learned it was not a place I want to live, but it is a place i will always love so much that it hurts. If anyone had told me before my year that I would feel this way at the end I would never have believed them. As others will tell you, buying property is complicated, Jamaica will do her best to bleed you dry. Another common expression on this forum is "Things aren't always what they seem." Many tourists have been tricked into buying property or investing in businesses without a clear deed or proper documentation and they end up loosing all of their investment. My suggestion is that you put your things into storage in Canada and just bring some decent bedding, clothing and perhaps a little cookware with you. The less you carry, the less you have to lug around on Island. I would also listen to what the others are saying about exploring outside of Negril before you settle down. Sorry if I am raining on your parade. Collectively there is a ton of information here but you must be ready to hear about some of the harsh realities we have all learned to face. Most people get head strong and do what they want to do anyway. We Jamericans will tell people what they don't want to hear - the good, the bad and the ugly, but as I said before, we will tell you the truth.
