The increase to the departure to US$35 is planned to take effect on June 1, 2016. The current Government also stated that any future increases in the Jamaican departure tax will be stated in US dollars. For those wondering, the current departure tax is JA$1800 put into place in 1999 under huge objections from the tourist industry as being too high (was equivalent to US$20 at the time).
The Government did not state if other currencies would be accepted for those who must physically pay the departure tax. For most visitors, the departure tax is included in the airfare pricing, but not for all visitors such as those using charter airlines (like Thomson from the UK).
Fortunately, the arrival tax of US$20 did not increase.
