I don't know that you can get a one bedroom at Sunshine Village for 30K (around $400USD). From what I've seen rents on 1 Bedrooms in Negril hover at around $500USD/month - I think Summerset Village might be lower, check them out for sure.

Doc is right - you are only allowed to stay on-island for 120 days (6 months) per calendar year. After 3 months you have to get your visa extended, as mentioned. Also as far as you getting a job, first you'll need to get a work permit and that's a process in and of itself and can take a while to obtain, especially if you do not have special skills to do a job a Jamaican cannot do.

Here's what I always suggest to folks planning on making a move or staying for a long period of time - start slow. Start by staying say a month or maybe two months. As you return, add another few weeks or a month. You might find that you really DON'T want to be there for such a long time. As you add time to your trips, try to schedule them during the slower months of July and August and/or during hurricane season. Living there during high season is quite different than living there in the summer.

So when you come down for your month of "checking it out", actively check it out. Go and SEE some of the places suggested here...check out Negril as a whole (beach, west end, deep west end) as well as surrounding areas such as Sheffield, Redground, Orange Bay, Green Island etc. Once you get outside of Negril, with perhaps the exception of Orange Bay, the rents will get lower, but you will have to get the hang of the transportation system and the amount of money you'd be spending on that.

Also consider money - the standard formula is figure out what you'll need money-wise to live there, then triple that figure. Negril is expensive.

Finally, it seems you are trying to move there for "love" - which is great but another argument for going slow. If you are going there with soul purpose of being near your Jamaican girlfriend after x amount of years in a long distance relationship taking it slow and committing to one month as opposed to six will let you realistically assess your relationship.
