I have been lucky doing the not-so-safe things I do while travelling. I have gone with strangers to remote places if I feel they are safe and respectful people, my only trauma's have been related to fist sized spiders being right there. My daughter's best friend was raped in Thailand by a cab driver --- she now has to get yearly HIV tests, negative for seven years now. She is the godmother of my twins and she just had twins two years ago, so she is safe with not having contacted HIV after so long.
Since I am planning on an extended trip into Central America next year, this story sort of scared me. My older daughters friends parents inherited an amount of money from their parents several years ago and quit their jobs and travelled the world. When they returned I asked them what their favorite places they went to were and their favored countries were Guatemala and China. There is a huge lake in the mountains of Guatemala that I was thinking of going to but this article kind of scared me!
Ohliz, in case you read this thread today I really enjoyed reading parts of your site www.travelstojamaica.com today.
My family is still kind of reeling in the death of our dog Roamie on March 31st. It is hard to come home from work without his greeting us at the door!
