RG,
Sigh. That was truly beautiful and moving.
I am sorry you have been going through hard times. Jamaica is the ideal place to heal but it can also open new wounds.
Out of all the cooking I have done in my life, I have found that cooking under challenged conditions is the most rewarding. Not only that, It tends to taste better than a meal from a modern kitchen. There is something about stripping it down to the basics that lets us concentrate on flavor alone. I also like that the meal has to pretty much go into one pot. The challenge of finding and using locally sourced ingredients and making them work into your desired dish is all part of the pleasure. There is something very therapeutic about it.
Welcome back to the West Coast. Thanks for sharing this. It was very touching.
