Blake, I read through about 5 pages in the thread and you made valid points. Especially the self serving ethics point you made, pushing folks to only sponsored drivers, I mean all the Jamaican drivers (route taxi included) all have to make a living don't they?
Maybe we were just lucky but last year we used route taxi system with no problems and plan to do so again this year.
Mexico has a system in place (collectivos) much like the Jamaican service (route taxi) and we always used them when in Mexico.
Also you mentioned that there should be a standardized pricing and I agree with that. Again comparing to another 3rd world country (I am more familiar with Mexico), they have a price board at all taxi staging areas. I wish Jamaica had collectivos they are small vans and you can actually travel 90 km with only one transfer for 30 pesos each leg per person. One leg would be Tulum to Playa Del Carmen, Playa Del Carmen to Cancun is another leg.
