Concrete block is best if you can do it, period. Render and paint it and its nice looking too. My godson walled his entire property in with a concrete wall. The rendering and painting part is going slower - as money allows but security-wise it is defnitely a deterrant - the thieves will go to the next yard that has an easier access.
Bamboo is tough and doesn't burn all that easily - it is also, as I hear, fairly resistant to duck ants.
I have friends who's yards are ringed with chain link. Again, expensive and can be cut through but not with four dogs barking with the intent to bite your head off.
As far as the glass thing, I've seen it done all over. The thing is though to make sure that the glass is such that it cannot hold water. If it holds water you have a Dengue breeding ground.
What I have been seeing a lot of is Bouganvilla as "perimeter" security. Pretty flowers hide nasty thorn that will juke you but good the minute you try to scale the wall.
