Apparently "human rights" issues are being pointed to as the cause for Ellington's (Police Commissioner) sudden resignation.
The story is, more or less, the US stopped providing $ assistance to JA law enforcement (as part of the Leahy act - which concerns Human Rights abuses by foreign governments) b/c of concerns over Ellington's involvement in the Tivoli incursion (or extrajudicial police killing squads, or both - not clear on that).
Ellington suddenly resigns and P. Bunting (Security Minister and Ellington's boss) states that the US did withhold $ assistance.
Didn't exactly say the US ordered Ellington to resign, but that is the conclusion being drawn.
Now if the US could provide leverage to help with child abuse. Or homophobia - oh wait, that's the Prof. Bain story.
Of course they withheld the cash, as well as cancelling Jamaicans visas in the US and starting to throw out artists. They squeezed the neck of Jamaica to get hold of dudus. The us governments hands were not clean on this either.
