Funnily I never realised there was such an expat presence in the west end , must walk round with my eyes closed lol..my experience of staying in the west end is that it is as Jamaican as anywhere. Same issues with current and water, and a mish mosh of good quality housing and rundown places. Not everyone living there is tourist focused either, none of my family is in the tourist or service business.
The mother in laws family live in the hills out by Lucea, very country. It feels the same to me personally, when I'm up there and there are no foreigners up there.
That said, I avoid staying with either side of the in laws, rest live in the west end. I now try to get hubby to agree to book in a hotel for most of the time, gives me time out of the responsibility of family.
As in cooking, cleaning, and clearing, none of which interests me when I'm away.
My hubby gets it worse than me, we ride ride the town, and We must hear the bwoy me brook winge more than once a day. It's his acquaintances that do this, think his pockets are lined with gold cos he lives in the uk.
He spends money like water, cos he gives it away...drives me crazy!
Me, the way I avoid a lot if it is, I never carry a bag in negril. I usually have shorts on in the day so I put 100s in one pocket, 500s in another, and 1000 notes in my bra. In certain situations, it's only ever the 100 pocket that I go into. I'm good at pleading poverty too lol!! At night hubby has the money! Again it's not people we know properly or are related to that are the problem.. It's the chancers and the long time acquaintances who
Also over the years I have learned never to ask "how are you" and when someone starts with the hard luck story, I give their arm a gentle touch, and say bless you, stay positive. They never have a return for this, and I get away with it every time.
I agree with the poster who said join in with how life is tough for you..works well I agree.
Yes love and hate relationship is the best way to describe time in Jamaica.
Beach bum, with your connections in your community, I think you should look into having a go at a chicken barrel, as suggested ask your friends what they think.
the reason you don't see many expats visible in the west end is because they are living in "gated" homes . . . lol . . .
