every time I contemplate responding to this post, I am overwhemmed with possibilities and perplexed as to what direction to chose.
I'm not one of those "2 or 3 word responders", so nice photos won't be met with "nice photos", unless they are mid blowing. Time consuming trip reports may get a thank you, partly because of their effort, plus the feeling of being appreciated when I have put lots of time and effort into one of mine. Views with no feedback creates a 'so what' atmosphere, but perhaps the silent majority have no sensability beyond themselves.
If someone's girble got run over by an elephant stampeed, it's not in my nature to appreciate (huh?) the pain they, or the girble, experienced.
I think some people come here only to spy. I've had my words used elsewhere (not against me) and it's almost a 'rub' or a dig. So naturally they wouldn't want to be known on this board. (phrase was knowledge is power. In the same vane as the expression "friendship is a profession", and others equally true and descriptive, although those old truisms have lost their authorship.)
We write, and reply, much like people converse in person and you want to meet again. Isn't it nice to be known, and to see people you've shared things (words) with. That's the (family/friends/something) way people get to know you more and visa versa.
This will be a little esoteric: how does a performer feel if after a song, the audience doesn't clap? I won't, or can't, explain that sentence but I will say that one person who has his own agenda and has read many of my postings, which vary in length and subject matter, had the gaul to say he did not know what my agenda was. I make no secret of mine; I have none. I share, and hope for the best.
On the miyard board, I always notice that the first post in a thread gets the most views. The more replies (further indented), the less views. Here, the view count goes up because the entire page gets displayed to reach the latest post. On MiYard some lengthly, informative, humorous, generous informational postings by me or others might be 12 replies down. I had to give away 12 new automobiles to the 12 people who read down that far in one thread, and to the others who didn't, "you lose."
On miyard I stopped opening posts of the guy from Germany cause they always have a photo of him, I have never met him, and there is usually only something basic like hello or he is arriving soon. On this board there is one poster I don't bother to read because I am afraid.
There are givers and takers in this world, just like there are selfish and non-selfish. The visitors who read and vanish don't relalize that sometimes it's appreciated when they take the time to introduce themselves.
So hopefully those and the 'why should I bother' answers answer the 'why' question.
If you asked why people don't start threads, I think it is lame for someone to make the excuse of not being a good writer or feeling they can't contribute at all. Wall flowers are understandable but, (ceasing here cause I can't or won't convince them of something they are hung up about.)
Sometimes the posting are dribble. Sometimes they aren't about Negril. Sometimes the posts are annoying (ie, straight party voters in an election) and every once in a while the subject line is as helpful and "I need help" in a computer blog. Yea, well, you want 1000 people to read your posting when only 5 might have the answer? But for friends, I'll let it slide when they pick "why." Shoot, I might even respond. Yet, that might lead to a new subject thread of "What" only to find out it lead to "What happens to the other sock when the dry only gives back one."
LOL. On the other hand, "what" might be "(what) does one do with the laudry when it rains every day and U R dependent upon a clothes line." Tangent; When negril.com was getting 200 views on the old style board (current board format on miyard), one titled "SEX" got over 400. Go figure.
I think I typed more than 25 words. Sorry.
