Jitters I did not ask for nor expect any apologies, I simply stated how I felt.
I am perplexed with your strong views, as to why you visit the island at all. Seriously there are countries that I have negative views on, I would not waste my time, money or vacation time on going there.
Macy, without being patronising I am going to love and leave the debate with you. I feel that at some point you have experienced something that is still affecting you now. Thirty five years out of Jamaica doesn't usually inspire the passion against the country and it's people that you have without a cause.
You my friend are doing the lumping together, and have chosen to ignore the horrors of the world we all live in.
Jamaica has all the same problems that exist in all of our countries. I see the most horrendous acts against children, women and men on a weekly basis, so I speak factually on this. Not always is there justice and children are killed under the nose of social services more than I can get my head round. Only yesterday a two year old was killed by family in humberside.
But my points are mute with you, I know that. I want to wish you well, and hope that you can find peace with your people when you feel ready. For you.
Thanks Winnie and oliz, I will stick around but will bow out of the thread.
I just wanted to resolve with Macy before I did.
I think the contributions by everyone has been valid and interesting, but I can't think of any way my own contribution would be valid any further.
And I feel uncomfortable with some of the points.

They never did find out for sure who did that - I was under the impression that the gardener was suspected but then "cleared". Doesn't matter, 10 years later - everytime I'm reminded of that incident my heart tightens up, Andrew is one of our best friends and Henrietta was such a lovely and wonderful woman.
RG7+ It was a terrible thing that happened and it surely hits close to home. My condolences in your loss.

I do think there's room in getting our own politicians to liaise with the ja govt on the human rights issues
...
Apparently "human rights" issues are being pointed to as the cause for Ellington's (Police Commissioner) sudden resignation.
The story is, more or less, the US stopped providing $ assistance to JA law enforcement (as part of the Leahy act - which concerns Human Rights abuses by foreign governments) b/c of concerns over Ellington's involvement in the Tivoli incursion (or extrajudicial police killing squads, or both - not clear on that).
Ellington suddenly resigns and P. Bunting (Security Minister and Ellington's boss) states that the US did withhold $ assistance.
Didn't exactly say the US ordered Ellington to resign, but that is the conclusion being drawn.
Now if the US could provide leverage to help with child abuse. Or homophobia - oh wait, that's the Prof. Bain story.
Of course they withheld the cash, as well as cancelling Jamaicans visas in the US and starting to throw out artists. They squeezed the neck of Jamaica to get hold of dudus. The us governments hands were not clean on this either.
I found some interesting info on the work of UNICEF in Jamaica.
They are leading on a number of programmes for children in Jamaica, child protection being one of them.
They have a four year programme plan for 2012-2016.

I think I need to go into session with Dr White Zinfandel or call upon the company of the brothers Jack and Daniel. I might get crazy and bed down Bahama Mama (j/k). I should STOP going back.

I am almost 50 and I stopped posting on these boards for a reason. If anyone thinks you can survive a certain things in Jamaica (rape, abuse and killing) of your loved ones and not be affected by it forever so be it. Just last year, lost a friend and her daughter in a senseless crash, yet no arrest. I give you all Jamaica, because as long as I am safe, it shouldn't matter. I believe in my heart many are OK with Jamaica because it mostly Jamaicans dying.
