There is no doubt that the US and Jamaica are very different. But we have plenty of intolerance here, and violence with it at times too.
For the record, I hate what I see as the prevailing feeling about gay people in JA. Of course I know Jamaicans that do not feel the way that mob does, but it's not a subject I often raise there.
I wonder how Jamaicans feel about the US incarcerating so many of its citizens, many for non-violent drug stuff? Or what they think when they see a video of the KKK or college kids in blackface at a ghetto-theme party?
I don't mean to minimize the very real prejudice and physical danger that gay and trans people in Jamaica face, not at all. But like I said, we aren't perfect over here, not by a long shot. If I overlook a lot that is bad about my country I can overlook things that are bad about the countries I visit also.
