Orchid in Jamaica *PIC* - wit - 11-23-2010

I've never seen an orchid growing in a tree before.

That particular orchid, if I'm not mistaken, is native to Westmoreland Parish and is not found anywhere else on the island. I've never seen them growing wild in the bush but the house I used to rent had them "placed" in all the trees in the front yard. My friend (from whom I sublet the house) was passionate about them. There was this guy, I forget his name now, that used to collect them in the bush and bring them to my friend. After a while though, my friend became concerned for the orchid's natural state IN the bush and started paying the guy NOT to go and collect them, lol.

Every morning while I rented there one of my rituals was "spraying" the orchids (especially when it hadn't rained in a few days). Very meditative and there was a Doctor Bird (I called him Buzz) that would come and bathe as I sprayed.

My friend has since moved back to the States and his orchids have been distributed to other friends, many who live in the same yard. As I still rent in that yard, I still get to enjoy them and in doing so always think of my dear friend who turned me on to "another side of this life" in Negril.
