JA politician extradition? - francesca - 10-12-2011

Just sharing:
Caricom News Network; October 12, 2011--

The Caricom News Network understands that a prominent Jamaican politician has been indicted by the United States authorities, possibly in connection with the ongoing criminal matter involving reputed drug lord Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke, who is awaiting sentencing in a United States court. Florida based attorney-at-law, Professor David Rowe, told host of the Evening Edition's Lambert Brown on 93FM yesterday, that he has been reliably informed that an indictment has already been handed down and efforts are now been made by US officials to make the necessary arrangements to extradite the person involved.According to Professor Rowe, this "bomb-shell" is expected to hit the Jamaican political landscape within the next ten days and is expected to have a devastating effect on the affected political party. He said news of the indictment has already been leaked to sections of the US media as well as highly placed political operatives in the United States.A report in today's edition of the Jamaica Observer news paper, seemed to comfirm Professor Rowe's shocking revelations to Lambert Brown by indicating that " extradition requests from the American Government for five Jamaicans, among them three prominent faces, are expected to be delivered to local authorities today." Quoting a a highly placed US Government official who spoke on condition of anonymity, "two of the wanted men are politicians, one is a veteran entertainer, while the others both conduct regular business at Kingston’s Port Bustamante."The Observer report said "the extradition requests are related to the ongoing criminal matter involving reputed drug lord Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke, who is awaiting sentencing in a United States court, following his admission of guilt in relation to racketeering in the US and conspiracy to commit assault in aid of racketeering."

According to the US Government official, the politicians named in the extradition warrants are believed to have assisted Coke in the importation of various items from the United States, some of which may not have been brought in legally.

The Observer was told that US authorities got critical information on certain persons in Jamaica from Coke, although his legal team has maintained consistently that the former fugitive did not squeal.

From rjr news:

Daryl Vaz, The government's point man on information, has slammed the door shut on speculations about pending extradition requests for at least two high profile politicians.

The minister hurriedly brushed aside the issue at the weekly post cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House on Wednesday after the Jamaica Observer newspaper reportedly that the American government has dispatched extradition requests for five Jamaicans which have among them prominent faces in local politics.

Mr. Vaz, who held aloft Wednesday's edition of the Daily Observer said there was no truth to the report and that no agency of government has in their possession any pending extradition requests for Jamaican politicians.

"I can only say that at this point, the Government, in all the ministries and departments, which would have to know about this, categorically state that the government has no knowledge, no information in relation to any extradition matter concerning politicians," mr. Vaz stated.

The Information Minister added that he was uncomfortable with how the story was portrayed in the media.

"When you see a newspaper headline that says ‘(Prime Minister Bruce) Golding hints (that Andrew) Holness will be come PM in a matter of days’ and right under that you see ‘More Extraditions? – Two politicians, (entertainer among 5 Jamaicans said wanted by US Government)’ it implies clearly, by virtue of how the stories are stacked up, that there’s a possibility, which is being propelled out in the rumour field for several weeks, that the Prime Minister’s decision (to step down) is not (his own) but (was made) by others for him based on action not come. I’ve already denied that," Mr. Vaz stated.
