Framing Jamaican Art - rootswoman - 06-15-2011

I have brought home several rolled up canvases over the years, for gifts, or for myself, but they never make it into frames. First of all, they tend to be odd sizes so you need custom frames. Custom framing is so expensive, although its worth it, it does cost far more then the price of the paintings. It is not something I can afford at the moment.

If I had a work shop I would make a simple wood frame to stretch the canvas on, then I would hang the pictures frame-less and call it a day.

I know how to cut mats and I even have a mat cutter, but I don't want a canvas matted, I don't think it looks right, so the frame must fit. I don't want glass over canvas, I want to see the texture of the paint, so that limits the type of frame one can use as well.

I was in Michaels and happened upon the perfect hard to find size (11 x 17) frame in the clearance rack. I was so excited, it was just what I had in mind and half off! (19.99)

I brought it home and then was faced with the dilemma of how to frame it. The canvas still needed to be stretched. So I cut a 11"x17" piece of 1/8" thick foam core (about $3.00 a sheet).

I used that heavy duty double sided tape to stretch it around and stick it to the foam core. The foam core was black so I used black tape to attach it to the frame.

I loved this painting before, but I really love how this frame makes the painting pop.

Does anyone else have any framing solutions or just the urge to show us your Jamaican Art. I never get tired of seeing it so please share.

Awesome Sallie..I too have that same dilema.. (sp?) but I love what you have done.

I have a canvas portait that I did from a photo of Karl Ricketts...and Dread Neck was the one who told me to go to Costco. I too however have spend the dollarsto have Michaels do the stretching..but it's not cheap.

Thanks for sharing that...and your photo framed looks fabulous!
