Tipping in Jamaica - Eco - 04-04-2011

Yeah another who has the cheapest beer type of threads but I want your opinions.

A little history....on my first reaches local friends.... not "friends" said that leaving a tip was an announcement to everyone that I had money to piss away and I didn't care about my money. In rural areas, I could not leave a tip if I wanted too...soooo many honest people thought I forgot my change. It was basically a this is the price, you pay the price type of thingy.

So, fast forward to Negril....those people are use to tips in town. In my mind and as a former barkeep, a TIP is a reward for good service. In my mind....treat me poor and no tip, treat me really good and I'll share you and your business to the world...but still no need to leave money in most cases.

So...I guess I'm cheap or protecting my flex of sorts?

So....how, when and why do you tip?

oh bwoyo lol

I tip all tranportation...private, charter and route. I've owned a vehicle in jamaica and my bil is a driver. NO MONEY in that biz.

I tip housekeeping $5.00 per day a/i and none a/i. I sure don't want to clean toilets (espec tourists) for that pitance.

The rest we tip like at home. 10-20% on top of the food/drink whatever depending on the service.

At Catcha and Rockhouse we tip more. At Catcha we tip $500 jm for lunches and $1000 for dinners. Because they make it that special for us.

We try and tip groundskeepers, pool people and security. Usually 1000 jmd for the week.

Tipping really adds up!!!

I like to tip the chef.

In rural areas or areas way outside negril I still tip as a soft, general rule of play. It depends. I just refuse back the change and say something like keep the jingle, the silver is yours, taxi fare, whatever.
