How can there be no hassels from vendors? Perhaps an unfair question not deserving a response.
My sister suggested I move there instead of Jamaica. Yet I am totally ignorant of the country. I know why I'd suggest Negril to someone -- a lot of miles under foot, but at 67 I don't have the fortide or time to discover ins and outs of a new place. And I certainly don't have 7K to spend on a hotel for a week.

There were very few vendors to be found, mostly set up along the sidewalk, which is also known as the narrowest street in the world. But they are not aggressive like what you find in the tourist areas of Jamaica.
We sure never paid 7K for a week, but we also didn't rent a 3 bedroom villa. Just like in Jamaica, there is a wide variety of options on where to stay.
I have not been to Ambergris Cay but it is probably a bit more "touristy" than Placencia. Getting to Placencia from Belize City requires a fairly long bus ride or flying in a small plane, which is what we did. To put it in perspective, the first time we went there, which is only about 5 years ago, we landed at the tiny airport in Placencia, picked up our luggage, walked outside to find zero cabs. One of the airport workers offered to give us a ride into the village.
As I have said, our next trip south will most likely be Belize again. I'm not sure if we will get away this coming winter as we are blowing our load on a month long trip to Europe, leaving in early July.
