At a family gathering over the weekend my son and daughter-in-law gave a hint to the name of their yet unborn male child . It is the nickname of a US  city . What can it be ? Since my son played hockey for 3 years for the OSU Buckeyes...oh I hope not...hehehe

Oly, short for Olympia.
The Norweign spelling would be Ole,  with is a respectable name, especially if your last name is Olson.

Wikisomething has a list if you have the time. Use your nickname of a US  city to look elsewhere although BING wasn't all that helpful.

It will be a surprise. But if you find something on that list, you might plead "please don't let it be ..." ahead of the birth. BTW, congradulations.

Some of the US cities that double as fairly common names: Austin, Charlotte, Phoenix, Madison.  

But you said nickname so here's a list of cities to analyze.  Hey, maybe it's Kaycee for Kansas City.

I'm still stumped if it is actually a nickname and not the name of the city itself (i.e. Austin, Orlando, Jackson, etc.).

Maybe "Lou" from (The Lou) - St Louis.

I doubt these fit. not even sure they are names, but...
Philly - Philadelphia

Frisco - San Francisco
Jax - Jacksonville
Indy - Indianapolis
Gump - Montgomery AL
