NEGRIL, Westmoreland — The police high command is offering a reward of $2 million to anyone with information leading to the arrests of the killers of 35-year-old real estate agent Andre Palakai, a Canadian visitor who was gunned down here Friday night.
“It is very early in the investigations and we are going to be offering $2 million to anyone who has information that will lead to the capture of these killers,” Commissioner of Police Carl Williams declared.
Police report that Friday, about 9:00 pm, Palakai, who lived in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, was walking along a section of the West End main road in Negril, in the company of his girlfriend and his father, when two men rode up on a motorcycle.
The men reportedly shot the visitor before jumping back on the bike and speeding off. Palakai was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The three were reportedly heading back to their hotel after they ate at a restaurant when they were pounced upon. Palakai’s girlfriend and his father were not hurt.
Up to late yesterday afternoon detectives close to the probe were still nowhere closer to the motive behind the attack. The detectives say the tourists were not robbed. “Absolutely no effort was made to rob them,” a senior investigator close to the probe told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.
Meanwhile, Commissioner Williams, who visited Palakai’s father Saturday afternoon, gave him a commitment that the police will do everything to bring the killers to justice.
“I visited the father of the Canadian tourist who was shot and killed in West End, Negril, last night (Saturday) and gave him the assurance that we will do everything to find the person or persons who killed his son,” the police commissioner told journalists.
He also disclosed that he was in Negril following visits to family members of two men murdered in separate incidents in Drewsland and Denham Town recently.
“Life, no matter who it belongs to, whether local or international visitors, is important and is valued by us. The lives of the persons in Kingston are no less valuable than the lives of the persons who visit us in our resort areas,” Commissioner Williams said.

$2 million JA is only $16,000 US. A person would have to be a complete idiot to rat out on some rude bwoy for fear of their own death for $16,000.

I can't remember a reward being offered ever for information on a murder in Negril (I'm talking ALL murders - locals & expats included). $16,000 may not be enough to the folks here living la dolce vida in the US, Canada and Europe - but that's A LOT of money for a Jamaican.
Is it enough to go into hiding for the rest of their lives? Ah...that's the crux of the biscuit.
