My friend there told me that they are all over the streets now that its "summer". Zipping around on illegal bikes, wearing masks, terrorizing people (they pulled some shit on some friends of mine, also on a bike but thank god they didn't shoot them!)
They are the scourge of Negril. And they need to be culled.
I guess the Police Commissioner is on his way to Negril to talk to the family and will be making a televised statement on TV tonight. Anyone have a link to online TVJ?
Can't wait to hear what he has to say. The shit is going to fly now.

Same thought, as well as by a commentor in one of the two news stories that it is always TWO on a motorcycle.
Now which previous murder did the powers-that-be (police commissioner?) pretty much imply it was the "last straw?" I feel justified in thinking this tragic event will just spew more lip service in press releases.

Disturbing and sad news for tourist, Negril and the local people that make their living from tourism. The crime problem has been escalating and mostly ignored for a years now. Not sure anything will change after this tragic event given the approach (or lack thereof) by law enforcement in the past.

There are lovely little beach communities in JAMAICA where it doesn't happen like it does in Negril. Treasure Beach, for one.

I almost bit my lip off avoiding the last thread. It was only a matter of time before a visitor/tourist was executed in Negril, and it will probably happen again. In a society where the police seem as corrupt as the criminals, things will not be getting better soon.
As of now we have no plans on a return to Jamaica, but is has nothing to do with this latest tragedy.
I turn 50 in November and my wife is treating me to a fishing trip wherever I choose. Nothing is booked yet but Panama is tops on the list.
We are constantly looking for a place where we hope to one day spend our winters, our favorite TV show is House Hunters International. As much as I love Jamaica, it's not a place I think I want to try to spend months at a time in, there are better options with great weather, beaches, awesome fishing,and genuine health care.

Tim, I watch that househunters international show too, mostly late, late night on Friday or Saturday. Most recently the one on the Cayman Islands, Virgin Islands and Guam. I couldn't believe that one show where a woman had gotten an air traffic controller job and her husband or boyfriend denied her a "deck" because he "had to have a dishwasher" --that one might have been in Puerto Rico.
Treasure Beach is still so nice, Blue Mountains, so many places, Negril, I don't even know what to think. For 25+ years I avoided the middle area, staying near to the Lighthouse and only going to Bloody Bay (before Rui RUIned the place) --

Just read that "suspects have been identified" - maybe the reward money worked? (It was in the Gleaner but I lost the link, sorry).
I'm actually planning a longer stay this year. I don't see any reason to change the way I roll there...I don't walk at night unless well escorted (and that's only the couple of hundred yards from my neighbor's shop to my gate), I don't carry credit cards or a lot of money with me and its always been in my DNA that if confronted with a gun, just give 'em what they want.
It is so discouraging to see what has happened in Negril. And people can "defend" the police as much as they want...they bring in 100 more "new guys" and 100 more "new guys" get bought off.
Sadly, because this was a tourist who was killed maybe...just maybe...things will change. Its not going to be pleasant seeing a military and police presence constantly and I'm sure that will put a lot of people off from coming or staying or whatever. Me....I'd be happy to see just A police car crusing my neighborhood after dark. Just one even.
This has been a super violent week with two very different countries dealing with very much the same issue - gun violence. Negril is in a quandry about how to stop the needless murders of so many and now ONE tourist....and the US needs to get its shit together regarding the sale of assault weapons in general but specifically to known nut bags.
