Negril Hotel - accused Chinese laborers - JonTom - 03-16-2016 Is this the hotel w/ the 4 stories on Bloody Bay? "Chinese Workers Cheaper Than Jamaicans – Contractor" http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com/article/lead-stories/20160316/chinese-workers-cheaper-jamaicans-contractor RE: Negril Hotel - accused Chinese laborers - Blues Pirate - 03-17-2016 No it's the addition to the Azul Sensatori. The article mentions Mexican owners. The Royalton on Bloody Bay has Canadian owners. RE: Negril Hotel - accused Chinese laborers - TAH - 03-17-2016 Read it again BP. RE: Negril Hotel - accused Chinese laborers - Blues Pirate - 03-17-2016 I can read. Can you? SMH "In a story published in The Gleaner on Tuesday under the caption 'More Concerns at Negril Hotel Project', a contractor on the project, which is an initiative of Mexican investors, told The Gleaner that he was not pleased that Chinese workers were being brought in to do menial tasks, which Jamaicans could handle." RE: Negril Hotel - accused Chinese laborers - TAH - 03-17-2016 I guess I can't. Apologies. I read it as a contractor on another project making the comment, but you're right. RE: Negril Hotel - accused Chinese laborers - Blues Pirate - 03-18-2016 It's all good. No worries. RE: Negril Hotel - accused Chinese laborers - JonTom - 03-29-2016 Saw this last week. Huge Crane/concrete pouring type thing at the Azul place. Also saw the construction at the Royalton. Maybe 8, 9, or 10 buildings. At least a few are already 4 floors, and based on my guess of rebar use, will go to 5 floors (meaning the rebar was sticking another story above the existing 4th floor - maybe they bend it over? I doubt it). Also looked like they took not just part of the property at Rutland Point, but ALL of it - construction goes right next to the Negril Village (whatever it is called now). There were 1,000 construction workers there. Seriously. RE: Negril Hotel - accused Chinese laborers - Blues Pirate - 03-30-2016 A TA forum member reported two days ago that the current height of concrete construction is three floors with the rebar sticking up for the fourth floor. RE: Negril Hotel - accused Chinese laborers - JonTom - 03-30-2016 A few buildings I saw were only at 3 floors (and one maybe only at 2?) but several were already at 4 floors. The floors were well-defined (walls poured, etc). I still think the rebar sticking up on some indicates a possible 5th floor. Went by on Friday and no one was there. Took me a bit to realize they shut down for Good Friday. RE: Negril Hotel - Royalton collapse - JonTom - 05-10-2016 Seems one of the buildings at the Royalton construction site had a collapse. Thankfully no one died (as of this article, anyway). http://jamaica-gleaner.com/article/news/20160510/worker-rescued-rushed-hospital-after-building-collapses-royalton-construction Too early for conjecture on why it collapsed, I suppose, but I do think buildings should be designed and projects organized such that this doesn't happen. |
