E. WARmington - JonTom - 08-07-2015

I've always been amazed a politician can behave the way I see Everald Warmington shown to behave in news reports, but this tops it all.

Hitting a female newspaper intern with a notebook??? (and cussing everyone out).

He did apologize later (after the above story was posted) - some lame excuse about medicine/pain. He's always out of control.
Can't understand how he gets with it.

RE: E. WARmington - kylake - 08-07-2015

Politicians everywhere amaze me with the stuff they get away with. Once in position they think they are somehow a cut above, IMHO. They are elected to do a job and that is all.
Take for instance here in the US. The house went out on recess a week ago will not return to the house until Sept. and they will just have 12 working days in that month.
I understand they need to connect with their constitutes but with all the social internet media and email available now they can connect enough to stay in Washington and WORK!!

I know very little about the two main parties in Jamaica. Can someone that does know enlighten me. All I know is one is orange and one green.......I think.

RE: E. WARmington - JonTom - 08-08-2015

People's National Party (PNP)
Leader: Portia Simpson Miller (current PM)
Color: Orange
Viewed as "left of" rival JLP. Generally viewed as more 'socialist' if not 'communist' (often cartoons/articles will show them using the term 'comrade' in reference to PNP members).

Viewed as less US-friendly (in the 80's anyway, after some concern over Jamaica's control of aluminum supply, via bauxite). I believe that has changed over time.
Generally have better relations with Venezuela, Cuba.

Common slogans: "We love the poor" - some see them as party of the masses. Others see this as, if not outright vote-buying, at least corruption (persons in a precinct organize voters and miraculously are awarded government contracts).

Past leaders of note: Norman Manley, Michael Manley, PJ Patterson

Jamaica Labour Party (JLP)
Leader: Andrew Holness (former PM - briefly)
Color: Green
Viewed as "right of" rival PNP. Perhaps viewed as more business-friendly.

Seaga is often blamed for starting 'garrison politics' (in the turbulent 1980's) particularly when Tivoli Gardens was created. Though evidence is pretty clear that both parties have their own garrisons (election results will show 'garrison' precincts returning 98% one way or the other, while others - generally in the country - will be more like 60% or 70%. Statisticians claim such results, in the high 90's, are obvious result of vote influence of one type or another).

Golding's refusal to deport Dudus to the US (or at least delay for years and very likely tip off Dudus to the extradition request and to the police/JDF moves to apprehend him) is largely seen as the reason he stepped down as JLP leader. And then the JLP lost elections (in a landslide). (Golding's precinct was Tivoli Gardens - mentioned above - and controlled by Dudus).

Cartoons/Articles will refer to them as "labourite".

Past leaders of note: Sir Alexander Bustamante, Sir Donald Sangster, Hugh Shearer, Edward Seaga , Bruce Golding, Andrew Holness

RE: E. WARmington - kylake - 08-09-2015

JonTom, thanks for taking time to explain the system/parties for me!

RE: E. WARmington - JonTom - 08-12-2015

The JLP leadership made Warmington issue an apology to the intern and media.

Then he arrived at another JLP meeting yesterday and flipped off the media and other JLP supporters, knowing full well they would take pictures.

Some people never learn from their previous mistakes and keep taking the same action expecting a different result:-)
