Yes OT!
I think you would really love isla mujeres. I am dying to go back there.  I think it is an ideal place to gather family together.  Since going there I have dreamed of one day gathering my family there - it would be the perfect place.
The beaches are so beautiful and the water is warm.  The food is incredible and you travel around on golf carts.  There isint much to do besides beach - water sports - eating and drinking - but if the intent of the trip is to bring the family together it would be a great place to do so. It feels very safe because it is an island and the only access is by ferry (or private boats of course)
The Mexican people in the Yucatan are so friendly and nice.  They work very hard and are not demanding.  They make beautiful handcrafts and they love animals.  I found the people to be delightful and easy.  

Kylake has spent a lot of time down there and other people on this board have visited. I think you would have a great adventure if you went there OT.  I also think you could find a great villa to rent for the family.

Cheap investment and tells you a lot about different places to rent, places to eat, etc on Isla Mujeres. Laura the lady that does the map is a really nice person and she an Perry invest a lot of time in keeping these updated.

If thinking about Akumal or Tulum area she has links for the Loco Gringo message board on the page for Rivera Maya. I have not visited in years but the Loco board used to also have a great group of people like this board that are very helpful.
