1st time to negril - cliff area - repoman470 - 03-08-2015

Hey everyone,

1st time posting here and 1st time going to Negril. i am staying at the Spa Retreat and was wondering what the walking conditions are in the Cliffs area.

I have looked at this map - http://www.talkofthetownnegril.com/Negril_Map_2_15_11.pdf

Seems like Jenny's, On the Rocks and No Name bar should definitely be walkable but what about Xtabi or the Canoe Bar? Are either of these walkable during the day or night or is taking a cab the way to go?

Appreciate any input on this or other good/bars restaurants in the area. Smile

You can walk no problem to all of the places mentioned. I would cab it at night as the road has no sidewalks and poor lighting in places. Add Eddie's Debar to your list, German bar if you want a solid brat or pizza. Mi Yard as well if you are out late and get hungry.

I would hook up with a local driver and have them escort you your first night out. They can show you some great places to hang out as well as provide your transportation from spot to spot. It is cheaper to do this than you would think.

The google satelite image shows the Spa at the very top. You have to build the URL for yourself. See end of this post. Shift the image a bit, and zoom in one, and you can see the whole 2 acre place. Tayon's bar is across the street at the southern edge of your resort. Jenny's is next door.

Even L&M market, very close to Blue Cave Castle, is maybe a 10 minute walk. I think you will get the hang of it quickly, but the shoulder is narrow in spots. In one place, the telephone pole blocks your path. Don't wonder onto the roadway, including crossing the street if it is more appealing over there, without looking left, right, or behind. They do come very close sometimes.

If there are walls and bushes, I have waited for the cars/trucks to pass before continuing.

You'll hear "beep beep" a lot, which means either "look out" or "want a taxi?" You'll learn to wave them by

I walk from Jenny's to L&M all the time.

On-the-rocks is close. I highly suggest you not have anything to do with the little shop right across from the Spa entrance because of my personal and 2nd hand stories (not rumors and hearsay)

Canoe and MiYard also recomended, but as a first timer, I guess I'd suggest a taxi (aka Charter) for them and L&M. More so after dark.

A taxi might only cost $5 to the market, and $10 to town. Maybe it's 10 and 20 now. I find that a parked taxi will cost you more. Establish the price before you get in. Often it's best to not have him wait (a R/T). You get to play the negotiation game all over again. Just stand on the side of the road.

Using a driver to show you around is, IMO, a more lengthly discussion including getting the right driver but can have its advantages.

Footnote; L&M market is a lot of groceries in a very small space. And they are open late. The bigger markets (3) are near the round-a-bout.

Some people start on the beach road and eventually migrate to the west end. Different flavors but overall, many repeat vistors.

to get the url of the satelite image, put on the front of the long line:

You could also find a YouTube video showing the road. Look for one mentioning driving to Blue Cave Castle

Tayon's is across the road and has the best pool tables in Negril. Don't walk around at night for various reasons . Be very careful on the road ,it is narrow with no sidewalks. This is Rastagirl's and Winni's neighborhood . I'm sure they will help out .

OT, not my neighborhood (I live deep West) - but I am familiar somewhat.  All advice and suggestions above spot on.

Rastagirl...do you see Pirate (ED) in the Deep West End?

Repoman, we sometimes stay in the same area as the Spa Retreat.  You have a pretty good list of places, so far.  I would also check out the Blue Horizon West, which is right next to the Spa if you turn right out of the gates. Just past Blue Horizon is Home Sweet Home.  HSH is a fun spot to chill for lunch or drinks, and their cliffs are higher than the Spa's if you want to do some jumping. No Limit Bar - just before L&M Market - is also worth visiting.

Cardboard box
Do you mean the shop or the bar across from the spa retreat?

We drink at  that little bar sometimes....is ther e something negative we need to be a aware of?
