Hashley, sorry to hear about your friends being robbed at knife point. It is unfortunate but walking the beach in Negril at night is not safe and I am a newbie but I had read that before our first trip years ago.
As pointed out walking in larger groups is probably okay but a couple or single person should not walk the beach at night.

Sad but true! Just glad your friends were not actually cut or harmed since the situation could have escalated into something much worse.

Hashley, I'm so sorry your friends had this terrible experience and glad that they were not harmed physically.  Probably emotionally harmed, though, and it will take time for that to heal.

Thank you for sharing your story here with us.  All the best to you and your friends!

Scary stuff to hear -- I go to quite a bit of the stage shows in Negril late at night & have never had a problem but I do not pretty much ever walk to beach area late at night alone.  The main road seems very safe, lots of jerk chicken vendors around & I have a rasta taxi driver (non red) who drives hotel workers back and forth from Orange Hill.  When I am there I stay in what I refer to as "the deep west end" -- near to the Lighthouse.  I do hear lots of comments from my friends that the neighborhood has "changed" -- there are people hanging about that no one has ever seen before.

Sad but somewhat true Sharleen - especially in the area around Bantons and the "crack house".  This is not new, been this way for several years.  My neighbors "take note" of strange faces and cars.  The street light is out between my place and my friend's shop where we hang out quite often and no one ever walks home unescorted.

Still...if I'm waiting on a taxi at Hylton Ave all I get are smiles and waves by the very few people walking the road after dark.  (Have gotten to know the rummies from the Patty Shop too, lol - they can be great entertainment while waiting on a ride).

RE: Held up at knife point in Negril - RoodDog - 03-25-2015

So should I consider being near the lighthouse the "deep West End" and should we be concerned? We can see the lighthouse from our room where we are staying. We were looking forward to walking down to Sir D's and LTU a couple times next month but now I'm having second thoughts. We also like to walk to Ahhh Bee's and Sharks. Is it only unsafe at night or should we be nervous during daylight hours as well?

RE: Held up at knife point in Negril - rastagirl777 - 03-25-2015

RoodDog, where are you staying?  The part of the West End Sharleen and I stay is past the Lighthouse...and the part that I mentioned in my post above is south of Moondance Cliffs.

In general, it is not a good idea to walk anywhere around at night, beach or West End Road in general.  Like I said, its a 3 minute walk from my friend's shop to my gate and I don't do it alone.  I used to walk to LTU from my house at night all the time up until about 9 years ago...now its taxi all the time.

RE: Held up at knife point in Negril - RoodDog - 03-25-2015

Staying at Catcha Falling Star. We walked to & from all of the places I mentioned last year with no problem since they are fairly close. Also down the lane to Sea Star. Not late but dusk-ish. Several times during the day. I guess that's my main concern. Is it safe to walk during the day now. I know about watching the traffic etc. I'm concerned about the crime now.

RE: Held up at knife point in Negril - rastagirl777 - 03-25-2015

Rood Dog, you should be absolutely fine at Catcha.  The street is well lit in that area so walking up to Seastar and to LTU and such in the evening should not be a problem at all.  During the day you have absolutely nothing to worry about.  Catcha is in an area that is surrounded by hotels, restaurants and shops.  The area Sharleen and I were referring to is about 1.5 miles south of Catcha and is more residential and like I said, the street light is out by my yard...dark stretches of road, anywhere, tourist or residential is never a good idea to be walking about, especially later at night.

Knocking wood - my neighborhood has been crime free for a good 8 or 9 years now...

RE: Held up at knife point in Negril - Tim - 03-25-2015

Don't you rent close to Out of Town Pastry? Considering you don't live there I'm sure you don't hear about every crime that takes place. Probably not everything gets reported, you know the whole " mind your own business" thing.

RE: Held up at knife point in Negril - rastagirl777 - 03-25-2015

As I mentioned before, I live in a yard that is about 1.5 miles south of Catcha.  Close enough to Out of Town Pastry that my yard-mates heard the shots when Colin was assassinated, yes.

And no, since I don't live there full time I don't hear about every crime...hell, my friends who live there full time don't hear about every crime...a lot of time I'll read about it here or on Facebook before its gone down the road to them.

Crime in my neighborhood - oh yes.  If it happens I'll hear about it one way or another.
