New JA novel - Sam I Am - 10-02-2014 For those of you who enjoy reading, I wanted to let you know about a new novel that was just released. I have not started reading it yet, but it sounds quite good. It is called A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James. He also wrote The Book of Night Women (which I loved) and John Crows Devil (which I struggled to finish). He is from Kingston and all three of this novels are based in Jamaica. This new one is historical fiction related to the assassination attempt on Bob Marley prior to his Smile Jamaica concert in 1976. I can't wait to read it. Here is the link for anyone interested: http://www.amazon.com/Brief-History-...s=marlon+james RE: New JA novel - Kiknback - 10-03-2014 Link did not work... here is the correct link. http://www.amazon.com/Brief-History-Seven-Killings-Novel/dp/159448600X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1412309195&sr=1-1&keywords=marlon+james Thanks for posting... sounds interesting! Although with 704 pages for the "brief" history... I'd hate to see the book with the full history RE: New JA novel - Schuttzie - 10-03-2014 Just checked my library and it looks like it will be coming soon so I've reserved it. Can't wait to read it, thanks for the headsup! RE: New JA novel - Likkle Red - 10-03-2014 thanks for the heads up....might make for some interesting reading this fall. RE: New JA novel - JonTom - 10-08-2014 I heard radio interview of the author a day or so ago. Sounds interesting. The interviewer did point out inconsistencies of the title. It is not _brief_ (700 pages???) and more than 7 people are killed. Can't recall the author's reason for sticking with that title. http://www.npr.org/2014/10/05/353254226/a-post-post-colonial-take-on-the-violent-birth-of-modern-jamaica RE: New JA novel - Sam I Am - 10-09-2014 Thanks for posting the link to the npr interview. I enjoyed it. RE: New JA novel - JonTom - 10-09-2014 NP SamIAm. Book looks interesting enough to pick up at some point. RE: New JA novel - JonTom - 10-27-2015 I was reading an article about Marlon James recently and was pleasantly surprised to learn that I'd never read about his sexual orientation before. He talked about writing being his ticket out of JA and what a relief it was b/c of the homophobia around him. (This article was b/c he won the Man Booker prize of course- so congrats to him!) |
