What are your comfort foods? - rootswoman - 03-24-2014

I posted this question  on facebook when I realized how telling my comfort foods are.  I get the most comfort from cocktail snacks.  Cheese and crackers, Nuts, chips and dip and olives. Obviously,  cocktail hour was a big deal in my home growing up! 


Which foods comfort you and bring you "home' for a bit (or bite)?

"Old" comfort foods have to be chicken noodle soup, mashed potatoes and home made cinnamon rolls.  (Can't tell I grew up in a cold climate!).   "New" comfort foods are wine and cheese!

Oh lord the list is long. If I am thinking back to my childhood one of my favorite comfort meals would be: smothered steak, mashed potatoes, sliced tomatoes and corn on the cob fresh out of the garden and cucumbers and onions. Also neck bones and sauerkraut. I still cook both but I miss my mom cooking them. My quick go to comfort foods are: Pillsbury German chocolate cake mix mixed up with only water and then I smoosh it on a spoon and eat it off the spoon with my finger-lol  Salted in the shell peanuts. A Hershey's bar with chocolate milk. Pork rinds. Now, if I am going to cook---- mac and cheese,,, the kind that is thick and gooey. Fried catfish, gizzards, chicken wings,,,,,,,,,,,, oh man the list goes on forever.............. how I don't weigh 300 lbs I'll never know..........

Fruits..oranges , banana's , grapes , mango's , fig newton's , etc. I grew up hard and we had very few fresh fruits . What I DON'T EAT ...rice pudding , porridge , custard and white bread . I don't not like them I just had them everyday of my childhood and until I started work (fishing ) at 15 and enough is enough.

Ice cream, mashed potato, meat loaf, homemade chicken soup (my mom makes the best) lasanya, sheppards pie.....guava jam, strawberry jam and I could go on and on.

Ya know - in all my life and all the food i've tried ive never had a Perogie.
Chickster, Do you make them from scratch ?-I see the frozen ones all the time and have always debated buying a box - are they any good?

I love any kind of pasta, but my fave would have to be  mac & cheese, hands down!  Followed by mashed potatoes with gravy, corn on the cob, meat loaf...  And I love turkey with all the trimmings.  Perogies are pretty good too - fried with bacon & onions!  I'm so hungry...
